Mailbox Client
Summary
Mailbox Client is a macOS desktop application that processes and displays email from the .mbox files you import. We do not collect, store or transmit your personal data to any external server. No analytics. No ads. No tracking.
Data the app processes
The app only works with the .mbox files you explicitly choose to import from your Mac. The contents of those files (messages, addresses, subjects, attachments, etc.) are used solely to display them inside the app and to let you search, filter and save attachments.
Where data is stored
All imported data is stored locally on your Mac.

Nothing leaves your device by default.
Optional cloud features
Two features can interact with iCloud/macOS services only after you explicitly enable them:
- iCloud sync: uses your private CloudKit database to sync libraries between your Apple devices. Data is encrypted by iCloud and only readable by your Apple ID. We never see it.
- Spotlight indexing: stores a searchable copy of your messages in the local Core Spotlight index on your Mac. The Spotlight index is local to your device and managed by macOS.
Both features can be turned off at any time from the in-app settings, and any indexed data can be wiped from the same screen.
Apple Intelligence
When Apple Intelligence features (summaries, categorization, sentiment, reply suggestions) are available and enabled, all inference happens on device using Apple's Foundation Models framework. The contents of your messages are not sent to Apple, OpenAI or any other third party.
Communication with external services
Mailbox Client does not contact any analytics, advertising, telemetry or cloud service on its own. The only outbound network connections are:
- iCloud / CloudKit, when you enable sync.
- Gravatar (optional), to fetch the avatar associated with sender email addresses. Requests are sent with the standard hashed Gravatar identifier; the service can disable this in the app's settings.
- Remote images embedded in HTML emails, when you choose the HTML view. Staying in the Text view avoids this entirely.
App permissions
Mailbox Client runs in a hardened, sandboxed environment as required by macOS. The app may ask for:
- Access to the
.mboxfiles you select (to import them). - Access to the folders you choose (to save attachments).
- Access to iCloud, only if you enable iCloud sync.
It does not access other data on your system without your explicit authorization.
Data retention & deletion
You are in full control of the data. You can:
- Delete an individual library and every message it produced.
- Wipe the Spotlight index from the Settings panel.
- Wipe the iCloud copy while keeping the local one.
- Uninstall the app and remove
~/Library/Application Support/GmailImporter/to delete everything.
Children's privacy
Mailbox Client is a general productivity tool and does not target children under 13. The app does not collect any personal information.
Third parties
Mailbox Client does not embed any third-party advertising SDK, analytics SDK, or social network SDK. Outbound calls are limited to the cases listed in Communication with external services.
Changes
Any meaningful change to this policy will be reflected on this page, with the date of the last update. We recommend reviewing it occasionally.
